Is there a
benefit to starting my kids in martial arts at a young
age?
As children approach kindergarten, they need to develop certain skills to help them succeed in school. Martial arts classes for children as young as 4, therefore, are designed with these skills in mind. By placing a child in a martial arts program at an early age, you can help build their coordination, discipline, focus, and understanding of respect: all skills that a successful kindergartener needs. More importantly, your child will gain life skills that will help them become a happy, respectful, and disciplined young adult. They will learn that we should be respectful of others, that we should treat people the way we would like to be treated, and that through hard work and determination, you can accomplish anything.
How can it help
with their academics and peer relationships?
Martial arts schools encourage students to interact with their peers in a positive, supportive way. Although every school is different, the philosophy behind martial arts remains the same: Our students are the leaders of tomorrow, so we should train them to be great leaders today. Martial arts programs follow this basic principle and, through classroom instruction, teach students how to solve conflicts with words instead of fist, how to direct and engage their peers positively, how to make goals and achieve them, and how to work with groups towards a common goal. Not only are these skills necessary to excel in school, they are necessary for success in life.
I’m worried about
bullying, how can Martial Arts help?
The Martial Arts is all about teaching children to be confident and proud of themselves and their accomplishments. Often times, unfortunately, bullies target those who have low self-esteem or demonstrate a lack of confidence. Martial arts schools and the instructors within them are very aware of this problem. Thus, all martial arts schools focus on developing the skills necessary to prevent bulling before it occurs. Students learn to feel pride in their accomplishments, to make eye contact, and to advocate for themselves when someone bullies them. Even more importantly, however, martial arts schools teach the dangers of being the bully and often maintain a zero tolerance policy for bullies. At its very core, the Martial Arts are about respect and the true Martial Artist will never brag or use their skills to harm another.
